WHO WE ARE:

Literacy For Tykes, Inc. is a Public Charity and all donations are completely tax-deductible. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that distributes books and materials to agencies that have identified children as at-risk who need help with literacy.  Often there are no reading materials in the home.

We agree with many studies which show the earlier the parent/child interaction with picture book reading (ideally as a toddler), the more literate the child becomes.

This effort is to meet the need that currently 50% of children entering kindergarten who have not had early intervention in this country are at-risk to fail. These same children stay 2 years behind their age mates, throughout elementary school years. Research has shown that this same group produces the majority of high school dropouts. LFT is an early intervention needed to prevent this crisis.

The most effective use of your money to combat this dramatic problem is to help promote the expansion of early literacy.

Target gives 5 percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism, to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Their one-time grant to Literacy for Tykes is giving much needed resources for books and materials to be distributed to families served by Buckingham County Social Services, Infant & Toddler Connection Heartland, and Piedmont Healthy Families in seven Heartland Virginia rural counties.

As a Public Charity, Literacy for Tykes needs funding from a wide variety of sources, including you. Any size gift you can donate is needed for our next project.

We have a goal to raise funds for Phase Two of our Early Child Literacy; Farmville VA/Tri-County-Plus Partnership. Books and materials have been requested by Headstarts in nine counties and other Low-Income Pre-Kindergartens in Heartland VA. These will be distributed to families who pre-screen for classes in Spring 2011, so they can read this special picture book together at home as preparation for the Fall 2011 classes. These books are vitally needed since often their are no children's books in these homes, according to observations by field workers.

We are constantly getting new requests from organizations who have needy families with early children. They love the step-by-step parent guidelines and great art work in our books and materials. It's just what their kids need. Help us help these children have brighter futures.
